Last month, it was reported that Ubisoft had cancelled its plans for an Immortals Fenyx Rising sequel, and just to rub salt in that recently opened wound, a fresh article from Axios paints the picture of an incredibly intriguing project. At least, on paper.
The article namedrops two beloved games as supposed inspiration for the canned follow-up: Elden Ring and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. Immortals 2 would apparently have players sailing between islands, and a lack of big old objective markers would encourage wannabe heroes to find their own way through the open world.
Already sounds good, doesn't it? Well, it gets better. Reportedly, the sequel was set to drop the narrated storytelling of the first game and have players spend less time solving puzzles. Both of these elements divided opinion in the original Immortals. What's more, the plot would apparently hinge quite heavily on player choice — with decisions impacting the setting itself — and you would once again be able to create your own character.
Immortals 2 is portrayed as a much more ambitious undertaking overall, complete with a more "realistic" art direction — and all of this is apparently why Ubisoft decided to can the project. The article, which is based on sources familiar with the game, goes on to explain that the French publisher had concerns regarding the cost of production. It also states that the eventual cancellation took the development team by surprise.
For what it's worth, it sounds like Immortals 2 wasn't that far along, so we'll never really know whether the game would have lived up to its potential. But you've got to admit, the pitch is pretty damn juicy.
What do you make of all this? Would you have been up for such a sequel? Dream about what could have been in the comments section below.

Modern Ubisoft is absolutely, exhaustively terrible.
Ubisoft has always been a guilty pleasure for me. I know they aren't great games. That said their check list style games definitely trigger something in my brain.
First one was a great game
Sounds more interesting than the first game…
I know peeps like throwing around the jokes about Square Enix being like "This game did not perform to our expectations, off to the ocean with ye", but I feel Ubisoft is a lot worse with this.
I rather like objective markers, honestly. Keeps me from wandering around aimlessly and having to resort to guides
Aw dang. I woulda loved it.
Classic Ubisoft... make a game that is for the most part really well liked, and then decide to can the sequel in favor of 14 more assassins creed games...
As someone who is really excited for AC Mirage and it's return to classic AC style, I am tired of Ubisoft constantly returning to milk the cash cow dry...
Sounds epic like the game it was based on - AC: Odyssey. Which also had a lot of sailing around the Greek isles.
They canceled this, but still developed Beyond Good & Evil 2? Shambles
The more realistic art direction was definitely a mistake, especially if it was a key factor in it's cancellation. The first game looked fantastic as it was.
Shame that we won't get this, but know of at least 3 Assassin's Creed games in development (NOT including Mirage).
@adit365 That probably isn't coming out either.
Modern Ubisoft has really changed. They went from releasing the same game 7 times a year to only once or twice a year.
Interesting connections to 'possibly' make. I always find Ubisoft have some creative ideas in there. Whether Rayman, Princeof Persia, Red Steel 2, Watch Dogs Legion/Rainbow Six Extraction ideas. The state of the games are what they are but I won't deny they do have out there ideas at times besides the formulas the games have being a reason I have no interest in playing them.
Yet the first three (starting to uncover PoP games more so nowadays and got both RS1&2 and need Rayman 2 to go) are the only ones I care for right now. Not because oh retro but just what they offer.
is it forever canceled ? or just pushed back
My kiddos are heartbroken. I enjoyed the first a lot
Since 2020 the studio has really gone down hill. It was already not great but they killed off several good franchises to basically stick to AC and to buy up IP. The only thing they have going for them is that they have good game engine optimisation although we will see about the new engine.
It hurts my heart to read what Immortals 2 could have been. Ubisoft killed the very last IP I cared about from them.
Wow, they cancelled this and yet refuse to give up on Skull & Bones?
It's always possible they'll still move forward with this concept under a new IP, especially considering how much of a departure it'd have been from the first game.
I really enjoyed the first game. Shame this has been canceled as i would have been all in..
I didn’t play a huge amount of the game, but dropping the narration and opting for a more realistic art style sound like bad ideas. The art style in particular is what made the game stand out. Dropping both these elements would have perhaps made the game more serious - the lighter, more cartoony feel of the game is what made it unique, but perhaps Ubisoft were right (and wrong) and everything should be like everything else.
Eh it ubisoft, they will f it up somehow. Wish they make a shooter with the division 2 gameplay and no online stuff though, I enjoyed that game.
I played the Immortals Fenyx Rising demo, and I was actually pleasantly suprised by it. It had a gorgeous art direction and, if I can remember correctly, the combat was pretty decent.
For me, it definitely felt like something new and novel from Ubisoft, which seems to be a rarity these days.
I think I'll pick the full game once I have the resources to do so.
Personally, I love most Ubisoft games. They have an addicting behaviour that fits my psyche of collecting stuff. However, it sounds like what made Immortals different (cartoon graphics, the narration and puzzles) from AC being stripped makes it more of an AC title (which I love). Therefore I would be glad its even cancelled as it is not the game I would want it to be. Its a shame the premise for the dlc was not made into a proper full fledge sequel instead.
The narration and art style of Fenyx Rising was part of its charm. Removing and changing those would've lost some of that, I feel.
Loved the first one, even the cheesy god humour lines made me laugh. Loved the art style so why would anyone even consider changing it?
Such a shame that the 2nd game was cancelled but, if the first one's DLC was anything to go by, then perhaps we'll just have to appreciate the first one until Ubisoft decide to reboot it.
Honestly, the first game was "imagine if breath of the wild was bad" so saying this to me just says the game would've been Elden Ring, if it was rubbish
Sigh…hope it does come back at some point
The first was great,.fun combat, funny story and funny narrating, was refreshing to play at the time, it was in no way bad, was it release around something more known?
So they scrap the 2nd one , which to be fair sounded great, and in turn we get 7 more assassins creed games...and the latest were getting stuck in some crap sand castle, and thrown into history that the general audience has Zero interest in
With Ubi's oversized barren worlds it looks good it was canned, because finding some quest would be like looking for blue grain of sand on Gobi desert... Anyway Immortals 1 was fun EXACTLY for its ballance of fights X puzzles. Sometimes it felt like Assassin's Creed lost brother. Yes, one extreme is marker large as whole mountain, but solution isn't removing it at all. Ubi simply cannot think in the middle, they are going from one extreme to another.
In the minority but I absolutely loved the original. Right up there for me. Loved the lore, characters and open world. 100%ed the main game. Dont think I ever completed all of the genre-mashup DLCs though. Pretty sad remake isnt happening.
Typical Game Fans: We want more original IPs
Game Developer: Here is one for you...enjoy
Typical Game Fans: NO not that one
Game Developer: Ok no more new ideas as you clearly don't want them
Typical Game Fans: NOOO we want more original games.
And the circle shall be unbroken.
Fenyx Rising is one of my favourite games this generation. Bitterly disappointed that the sequel was cancelled...
I have to agree with the people why are they still working on Beyond Good and Evil at this point then.
Not a big loss for me. Didn’t enjoy the first, never played Elden Ring and wasn’t a fan of Wind Waker. So I’m happy enough not seeing a sequel for this knowing they can focus on something better
***** Ubisoft for cancelling the sequel to an amazing game. Now that they cancelled it all they're gonna be doing is bringing out more boring ass Assassins Creed games. 😡🤬🖕
